The Tar (also called Daf in Kurdish regions) is a frame drum with a light goat skin head. It is played with taps and rolls of the fingers. "Tar" comes from the word for string. However, the tar drum lost its strings a long time ago. The Bendir of Morocco is a similar drum that has retained the string snares under the head. This drum can be found throughout Northern Africa and the Middle East. It is sometimes used to accompany Islamic songs.
