|The darbuka (which is sometimes called doumbek) can be found all over Arab and Middle Eastern countries. These examples were imported from Essouira on the coast of Morocco. Fish skin is stretched over the ceramic body. Fish skin does not fluctuate in pitch as much as goat skin and therefore it is most often used in places where the humidity is high. Its tone is high pitched like the plastic head darbukas of Egypt. The darbuka pictured left is plated with ornamental metal.
